Especially for a new player it can feel exhausting to read lots of text. Large amounts of text can be difficult to digest for new players: Many users complained about the large amounts of text the game throws at them. Luckly game’s manual can be used to refresh users' memory when needed. One user also accidentally closed the game when they tried to do another shortcut. This is understandable as there are many different functions, and it is difficult to remember everything instantly. There were also moments where users did not realize that the game was waiting for an input and thought that the game was frozen.Īccidentally closing a popup window: A user accidentally closed a popup window before reading everything they wanted to read.Ĭontrols and especially some keyboard shortcuts can feel difficult: Users stated that there are many keyboard shortcuts to remember. Users often tried to input a lower-case letter when they should have inputted an upper-case letter. The recordings were used in analysing the usability observations by the testing team.Īfter going over the materials we gathered we noticed some reoccurring usability problems.Ĭonfusion about the user inputs: Many users found problems with situations where the game was asking for user input. The recording includes screen-share of the test persons, including the game view and the keyboard/mouse tracker view. The recording quality was mostly very good except for one recording in which there were some disruption in the video. The test recordings were done with Microsoft Teams. None of the test persons had previous experience with Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup game. The test persons in the test sessions were in the age range of 19 to 26 and they all had some experience with gaming, mostly on a computer. The test sessions lasted about 1 hour on average from which 45 minutes was testing the five-stage tutorial of the game and 15 minutes was reserved for the pre- and post-interviews. The test sessions were recorded and there were three people from the testing group involved with each session. The test sessions were done remotely via Microsoft Teams. Usability testing was carried out by pilot testing and five test sessions with voluntary test persons. Our main aim was to find out how the usability concerns regarding the tutorial had changed compared to the previously done testing performed some 10 odd years ago. The testing was based on previous testing on the game done by the University of Oulu. During the testing we found some usability issues that we believe should be considered for the development of the game. The planning for the tests was done by students based on previously conducted usability testing on the game. Tests were done for the course User Experience and Usability Evaluation, held in spring 2023 by the Department of Information Processing Science of University of Oulu. This post goes over usability tests conducted on Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup.
